Job Overview
We are seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead key remediation and environmental compliance projects across U.S. EPA Region 5, with an emphasis on regulatory interface and complex project execution. This role is ideal for an experienced environmental consultant with 15+ years of relevant project management experience and a demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality work while fostering client relationships and mentoring junior staff.
The preferred candidate will be based in or near the Chicago metro area and bring a strong understanding of state and federal environmental regulations, particularly within Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. We welcome professionals from all technical disciplines—geologists, engineers, scientists—who can successfully lead multidisciplinary teams and bring value to clients across a wide range of services.
Essential Responsibilities
Technical Expertise and Execution
- Manage multi-party or single-party CERCLA, RCRA, and voluntary remediation projects through full life cycles, including conceptual site model development, remedy evaluation, and performance monitoring.
- Provide strategic technical direction, quality assurance oversight, and senior-level review of technical deliverables.
- Oversee preparation of site investigation reports, feasibility studies, corrective measures studies, risk assessments, and remedial design documents.
- Lead client and regulatory meetings, including direct interface with Region 5 and state-level EPA representatives (especially Illinois EPA, Ohio EPA, IDEM, and Michigan EGLE).
- Provide leadership and technical support for in-situ remediation and monitored natural attenuation (MNA) efforts.
- Ensure field programs are implemented safely, efficiently, and in accordance with regulatory and company standards.
- Apply risk-based strategies, advanced data analysis, and cross-disciplinary insights to guide project decisions.
Clients & Growth
- Act as primary liaison for strategic clients and high-priority projects, managing expectations and identifying future opportunities.
- Support development of scopes of work, proposals, and pricing strategies in collaboration with marketing and BD teams.
- Mentor mid- and junior-level staff in client engagement and project development.
- Maintain a presence at industry conferences and represent EHS Support’s capabilities across the Midwest region.
- Identify and contribute to organic growth of existing accounts, and assist in pursuit of new ones.
Team & Culture Management
- Mentor and coach early-career team members while fostering a positive, accountable, and inclusive team environment.
- Collaborate cross-functionally across service lines to maximize project success and staff utilization.
- Provide regular feedback and promote technical development and leadership growth among staff.
- Utilize and contribute to internal tools such as Project Maps, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and OneNote to support team communication and project transparency.
- Model and reinforce the company’s core values and expectations of professional autonomy, humility, and excellence.
Operations & Administrative
- Monitor scope, budget, and schedule for all assigned projects, ensuring timely and profitable delivery.
- Submit timesheets, expense reports, and project documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
- Engage in company-wide learning and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Collaborate with Project Assistants and support staff to streamline operational processes.
Required Competencies & Key Experience
- 15+ years of environmental consulting experience (preferably with federal Superfund, PRP, and state-led programs).
- Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and teams concurrently.
- Strong knowledge of Region 5 regulations and direct experience interfacing with Illinois EPA, Ohio EPA, IDEM, and EGLE.
- Proven experience with complex in-situ remediation approaches, MNA, and performance-based closure strategies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with data analysis and interpretation, including geospatial datasets, conceptual site modeling, and risk assessment.
- Strategic thinker who can translate client objectives into actionable technical pathways.
- Effective in remote work environments and virtual collaboration.
- Ability to travel, as needed, throughout Region 5 and adjacent states (travel may include site visits, regulatory meetings, and client presentations).
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geology, engineering, or related field (required)
- Advanced degree (MS, PhD) and/or professional licensure (e.g., PE, PG, CHMM) strongly preferred
