Wetland Scientist/Permitting Specialist

This opportunity is for a flexible and self-motivated individual that is willing to learn and grow as part of a team while providing wetland and permitting expertise to projects within the Sediment and Risk Assessment (SRA) and Remediation (REM) service lines at EHS Support. You will be joining a high-performance team of ecologists, scientists, risk assessors, and engineers that is focused on providing high-quality technical and strategic solutions to a variety of clients. Your primary responsibilities will include developing EHS Support’s wetland and waterways capabilities, including, but not limited to, wetland assessment, delineation, valuation, permitting, and restoration services. You will also be responsible for development and delivery of technical reports or other regulatory submittals to report findings.

The selected candidate will lead federal, state, and local regulatory permitting processes to obtain authorization for construction and environmental remediation activities that may impact wetlands, waterways, or other regulated natural resources. Field responsibilities will include leading the assessment and delineation of wetlands, waterways, or other regulated natural resources within the project area. Permitting responsibilities will include identification of coordination with regulatory agencies through permit application approval. You may also provide technical support to projects focused on ecological risk assessment, sediment assessment and remediation, biodiversity and ecological services, Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA), and water quality compliance.

Typical technical responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and leading field-based assessments of wetlands, waterways, and other regulated natural resources, including the delineation of regulated resources in accordance with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and state protocols (New Jersey and New York experience is preferred)
  • Leading federal, state, and local regulatory permitting processes for construction and environmental remediation activities
  • Developing aquatic and terrestrial habitat restoration design plans
  • Providing assessments of wetland functions and values
  • Supporting NRDA

Typical managerial responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing project execution plans
  • Participating in project strategy discussions with technical team members and clients
  • Working with internal resources to identify appropriate staffing and skillsets and define roles and responsibilities of project team members
  • Establishing timelines and maintaining regular communications with the project team to ensure timely deliverables
  • Reviewing project reports and taking corrective measures to ensure quality work products or address challenges
  • Managing financial project performance and maintaining work within scope and budget
  • Understanding all project aspects, including objectives, scope of work, technical requirements, regulatory framework, and contract compliance and communicating these items to project team members
  • Reviewing project invoices and adhering to internal quality control procedures
  • Mentoring and upskilling of junior staff
  • Maintaining communications with clients or internal client managers on progress via written and verbal communications

Experience in the following focus areas is preferred:

  • Freshwater and coastal wetland delineation and permitting in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Plant and soils identification
  • Aquatic and terrestrial habitat restoration design
  • Wetland functions and values assessment
  • National Environmental Policy Act documentation
  • NRDA
  • State and federal special status species
  • Ecological risk assessment
  • Sediment and surface water quality assessment
  • Biological community surveys

Skills required for success in this role include:

B.S. or M.S. degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resources, or a closely related field of study • 5 to 10 years of freshwater and coastal wetland experience in environmental consulting or similar work experience • Ability to design and implement field-based wetland assessments and restoration plans • Experience preparing state and federal wetland permit applications • An understanding of environmental regulations and guidance under state and federal programs (e.g., RCRA, CERCLA) • Familiarity with ESRI GIS, AutoCAD and MS applications.

LOCATION: Anywhere in U.S. (home office-based position); though, greater Philadelphia region is preferred.
